Choosing a broadband offer
When choosing your next broadband provider and package, you need to ask the following questions:

- What do you use the internet for (web surfing, downloading, gaming e.t.c)?
- How much are you willing to pay for your broadband service?
- Do you need hardware (i.e. a modem) and if so what type do you want?
- Who in your household is going to be use broadband?
- Are you looking at buying a broadband only package, or do you want a bundled package (i.e. broadband and phone, broadband phone and tv)?
- Is there a specific broadband provider you want to use or avoid?

Broadband hidden fees
There is an increased trend to include hidden charges within broadband packages, so don't be tricked by the headline price, which can include thin profits for the internet service provider who aim to increase profits and cover costs using other methods.
These charges need to be reviewed carefully before deciding on a broadband package:
Broadband hidden fees include the following:
- Charges for using a credit card to pay for your broadband service
- Cancellation charges for ceasing your service, which can often be quite significant
- Charges for downgrading to a lower cost broadband package
- Hardware recovery fees to replace your router or modem when you cancel your service
- Charges for moving house whilst you are in your broadband contract
- Reconnection charges when your phone line is disconnected and hence your DSL line lost too
- Helpdesk call charges incurred when you ring customer and technical support
- Interest charges for overdue balances can be high when payment is delayed
You can find more about these hidden charges by reading the full guide to broadband hidden fees .

Broadband
Broadband Internet access, often shortened to just broadband, is high-speed Internet access and typically contrasted with dial-up access over a modem.
Dial-up modems are generally only capable of a maximum bitrate of 56kbits (kilobits per second) and require the full use of a telephone line, whereas broadband technologies supply at least double this speed (common broadband rate is defined as up to 8Mbps).
To use a broadband service you can use your existing phone line, this is upgraded when you sign up for broadband with an internet services provider. All you need once you have signed up is a modem (which usually offered free with your broadband service) and your computer.
One of the major advantages of broadband is that it stays connected all the time and you don't need to dial a connection each time you want to use it. This allows you to use your home phone at the same time as your internet, which is not possible with traditional dial up services.
Broadband, a contraction of 'broad bandwidth', provides high-speed data-transmission rates over various mediums, not only over your phone line but also over digital cable and satellite connection.
This has changed the way in which people use the Internet, for shopping, downloading, gaming, communicating and much more.
